چکیده

Abstract. Prior geophysical surveys provided evidence for a hypersaline subglacial lake complex beneath the center of Devon Ice Cap, Canadian Arctic; however, full extent and characteristics hydrological system remained unknown due to limited data coverage. Here, we present results from new, targeted aerogeophysical survey that provides (i) supporting existence (ii) network shallow brine/saturated sediments covering ?170 km2. Newly resolved shorelines indicate three closely spaced lakes total area 24.6 These presence diverse environment with potential support range microbial habitats, provide important constraints future investigations this compelling scientific target, highlight its relevance as terrestrial analog aqueous systems on other icy worlds.

A New Coherent Radar for Ice Sounding in Greenland

This paper will discuss a new multifrequency dual channel coherent radar depth sounder for sounding ice. This sounder is unique, since it is a fully coherent chirp radar designed to operate at low (1,500ft) as well as high altitudes (30,000ft). The dynamic range of the radar is sufficient for simultaneously imaging both the top and bottom returns from ice without the need for data blanking or S...

Variability in ice motion and dynamic discharge from Devon Ice Cap, Nunavut, Canada

Feature tracking of approximately annually separated Landsat-7 ETM+ imagery acquired from 1999 to 2010 and speckle tracking of 24-day separated RADARSAT-2 imagery acquired from 2009 to 2015 reveal that motion of the major tidewater glaciers of Devon Ice Cap is more variable than previously described. The flow of almost half (six of 14) of the outlet glaciers slowed over the observation period, ...

Modelling the delivery of supraglacial meltwater to the ice/bed interface: application to southwest Devon Ice Cap, Nunavut, Canada

The transfer of surface-generated meltwater to the subglacial drainage system through full ice thickness crevassing may lead to accelerated glacier velocities, with implications for ice motion under future climatic scenarios. Accurate predictions of where surface meltwater accesses the ice/bed interface are therefore needed in fully coupled hydrodynamic ice-sheet models. We present a spatially ...

Subglacial floods beneath ice sheets.

Subglacial floods (jökulhlaups) are well documented as occurring beneath present day glaciers and ice caps. In addition, it is known that massive floods have occurred from ice-dammed lakes proximal to the Laurentide ice sheet during the last ice age, and it has been suggested that at least one such flood below the waning ice sheet was responsible for a dramatic cooling event some 8000 years ago...
